Steve Outing of the Poynter Institute lists [[11 layers of citizen journalism|http://www.poynter.org/content/content_view.asp?id=83126]]. These are eleven different aspects of a medium in order for it to be considered citizen journalism. Now, not all citizen journalism sites such as [[MyMissourian.com|http://www.mymissourian.com]] and a section on [[MSNBC's|http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6639760/]] Web site feature all eleven aspects, but integrating a majority of them enhance their coverage and foster more of a community feel.

1. Comment: Under each pod uploaded onto the site has a section underneath for [[reader comments|http://current.com/items/88617821/busking.htm]] on Current Tv. There is also a section entitled [[People are talking|http://current.com/topics.htm]] in which comments are gleaned from different stories. Some comments are also selected for use on their TV channel.  All submitted work is subject to comment.

2. Citizen add-on reporter: This is an area Current TV can further develop by fostering a more teamwork-style approach. The staff at Current TV currently creates original content for television and the Web. Stories on [[national issues|http://current.com/items/89599564/obama_pledges_not_to_smoke_in_white_house.htm]] could be enhanced by mixing work done by professionals with add-ons from citizens would further tear down the barrier between journalist and citizen. However, it may be difficult for citizens to be able to learn of original, national news. After all, that is why we have paid journalists.

3. Open-source reporting: An area that being developed at every innovative, citizen journalism start-up, and perhaps one of the true potential strengths of citizen journalism is open source reporting. In order for this to be properly done, there needs to exist a strong number of submitters with a wide range of experience and knowledge. 4. Citizen blog house- though not technically a blog, the fundamental values of a blog are ever-present in Current TV. [[The topics at the top of the page|http://current.com/]] act as tags and the content is linear in a chronological and most popular way. The site utilizes a voting mechanism to determine the most popular pods. With links to where some of the pods came from, an aggregation of news sites is easily formulated by users, whether it is done consciously through a blog roll or not. Once again, all users are invited to submit for the site.

5. Newsroom transparency- Current TV uses their [[FAQ page|http://current.com/s/faq.htm]] as a way to be as transparent as possible. It is extensive, flexible and has information available where there is someone monitoring e-mailed questions as well. Editors guide users towards making better submissions by having a a staff that chooses which submissions make it on the site and on the TV channel, even giving $2000 to anyone whose piece makes it on the small screen.

6,7,9. Stand-alone citizen journalism site (edited and unedited), Hybrid site- Current TV is not a stand-alone citizen journalism site. It is made up of a mix of citizen journalism and professional journalism pods that are submitted by users. About one-third of the stories that make it on air are original reports from users. If the popularity of Current TV and other sites like it, such as [[Digg|http://digg.com/]], then localization on these sites stands a chance. But in order to be more local, there has to exist a certain density in geographic reasons to be relevant enough to feature anywhere. Figuring out density, however, is certainly an acquirable piece of information and could help shape Current TV and help spawn more localized coverage.

8. Add a print edition- Current TV has expanded beyond the realm of online journalism through their TV network that reaches 30 million people. Though not a print edition, having the television format to work with helps spread the news more quickly and to a different set of people. With the current economic climate, a print edition doesn't make much sense right now. But by using [[Youtube and TV|http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-t8HsHNN-k]] a print edition may not be necessary to create a true citizen journalism Web site. 

10. Integrating pro and citizen under one roof- Though not a physical roof, the metaphorical roof that covers the Current TV brand does integrate citizens and pros. Users submit videos from any number of news organizations, [[but they also include written commentary from the user that submitted the video.|http://current.com/items/89598127/a_cure_for_alcoholism.htm]] By combining professional reporting with citizen commentary and explanation, integration into a truly citizen and truly professional journalistic enterprise is reached.

11. Wiki journalism- Another area that can improved and made more open to citizens is the ability for users to actually edit the stories and change a posted story, [[much like this wiki page.|http://currenttv.tiddlyspot.com/]] There would be issues as to having users edit professional pieces, obviously, but users correcting other user-submitted videos would be a way to the online journalism site and [[help prevent misinformation from spreading like a wildfire.|http://blog.wired.com/business/2008/10/cnn-citizen-jou.html]]

[[Current TV|http://current.tv/]] is a 24-hour television channel that is based around viewer-created content (dubbed “VC2”). Viewers submit videos, which are usually about three to seven minutes long, Current.com’s registered users vote on those videos, and then Current’s staff decide which of the top videos will be aired on the broadcast. 

Current was [[founded by|http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/25/business/media/25gore.html?scp=3&sq=%22current+tv%22&st=nyt]] Vice President Al Gore and Joel Hyatt, the national finance chairman of the DNC during Gore’s failed run for president. It first aired August 1, 2005. The first video, or “pod,” was about base jumper [[Jeremiah Mulholland|http://current.com/items/76369282/jumper.htm]].

Current TV was modeled after the Canadian late-night arts and culture TV show, "[[ZeD|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZeD]],"
which mixed viewer submitted content with more traditional television content. Executives from Current TV consulted with ZeD’s producers before launching the channel.

It was also modeled on the MTV news program "[[UNfiltered|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UNfiltered]]" which let viewers submit their own news stories.  Current is intended to reach the same 18 to 34 demographic. 

At first, the channel wasn’t taken very seriously, a [[New York Times article|http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/22/arts/television/22watc.html?scp=4&sq=%22current+tv%22&st=nyt]] said “Current TV is at first glance a punch line: MTV without the music.” But, according to the same article, it was quickly seen for what it was: “for-profit public-access television, an attempt to add grass-roots diversity to a television universe that is ever more controlled by a few media conglomerates. Current is easily mocked, but it is at least one youth-oriented cable network that does not dance to the tune of the 82-year-old Sumner Redstone, the chairman of Viacom.”
	
The viewer-created content isn’t just news, it’s also advertising. Current TV’s ad contest works in the same way as its process for broadcasting news segments, with users submitting the content and other users voting for the winner. The [[first user-created ad|http://current.com/items/76314302/sony_v_cam_transformation.htm]], run on May 11, 2006, was for Sony and was created by Tyson Ibele, who [[received $1000 in payment for the ad|http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/11/business/media/11adco.html?_r=1&scp=10&sq=%22current+tv%22+&st=nyt]].

In 2006, Current TV signed an agreement with British Sky Broadcasting to launch a localized version of the Channel in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The agreement allowed Current to reach 22 million more viewers in the 8.2 million households that subscribe to the BSkyB’s digital service.

Current TV now provides a constant interative source of news that is targeted at a younger demographic than most news organizations. The rankings of the content being voted on for the website are a reflection of the overall audience of the network and the website. Current TV's Internet site is an example of a website properly using hypertextuality. The site divides it content into several categories, and these categories have their own contributors that act as bloggers. The site has contributors for categories like Comedy, TV and Film, Art and Style and Music. These bloggers find newsworthy content from other sites and hyperlink them to Current's website, and the site's visitors can then vote on the blog entry the same way they would vote for a typical news story on Current TV.

Current's Internet site raises the bar for audience involvement even higher [[by giving Current's viewers a chance to submit their own created ads for a profit.|http://current.com/ads.htm]] Site visitors can also vote  for ads, and the most popular ads right now are viewer commercials made for Nikon cameras. Companies also allow the site to send out assignments for viewers to specifically make ads for their services or products, and the winners receive cash prizes that can be as high as $60,000.

The YouTube channel has increased Current TV's visibility to a larger audience. More importantly, the ability of users to comment on Current TV's YouTube videos has given the public a chance to have a dialogue over the stories being featured on a different site. Since debuting on February 3, 2006, the channel now has over 11,400 subscribers and 1,187 "friends" on YouTube. The YouTube channel currently features over 140 videos.

Building a prominent presence on the Internet has been one of Current TV's goals from the beginning of its inception, and the YouTube channel is an example of how the network has become more and more web savvy.
